Esi Codjoe is a Partner at Turnpenney Milne LLP and has been practising for over 20 years. Her legal experience includes employment, labour, human rights and administrative law.

Esi provides her clients with pragmatic and solutions-focused legal advice. She acts for employers in their employment, labour and human rights disputes. She also acts for employees in their employment and human rights disputes. Esi’s work includes appearing before boards, tribunals and courts concerning wrongful dismissals, human rights complaints and grievances of unionized workers. Esi also provides counsel to boards of directors concerning governance and employment issues.

Esi conducts workplace investigations, reviews and assessments for both large and small employers. Her experience as a former adjudicator, including as a Vice Chair at the Human Rights Tribunal, is particularly relevant to her investigation, review and assessment work. She has extensive experience questioning witnesses, assessing evidence and crafting written findings.

Esi has particular expertise in human rights law and is often asked to assist clients with their human right concerns, including providing advice, policy review, and litigating disputes. She is an experienced mediator and conducts mediations of workplace and board disputes. Her dispute resolution practice also includes coaching and facilitation work, such as coaching employees to resolve workplace conflicts.

Esi has expertise in teaching and training. She provides tailored training to address each client’s unique needs. Esi taught employment law and labour relations at George Brown College, and Employment Law and Business Law at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University).

Her teaching and training practice has included publishing articles for the OBA’s Just Magazine (a publication for which she sat on the editorial board). Esi wrote a chapter in the Lexis Nexis book, Social Media and Internet Law – Forms and Precedents.

She frequently assists School Boards and Universities with their legal needs.

Esi was named as one of Canadian Lawyer Magazine’s Top 25 lawyers. Lexpert named her as a Change Agent in Law. The Ontario Bar Association gave her the Joel Kuchar award for Professionalism and Civility.

Esi is an active volunteer, her roles have included acting as the Toronto Representative on the Ontario Bar Association’s Board of Directors, a board member at Family Services Toronto. She is the current President of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers.

Esi’s interests include trying to make gelato a food group while traveling and cultivating curiosity.
