Hayley Smith Lawyer
Hayley conducts investigations across sectors on allegations relating to workplace policies, the Human Rights Code, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, with particular expertise in files involving sexual and racial harassment, poisoned work environments and discrimination. She also conducts audits and investigations for colleges, universities and hospitals.
Prior to joining Turnpenney Milne LLP, Hayley practised as a labour and employment associate at a national boutique firm, advising employers on all aspects of workplace law. That experience gives her insight into the risks employers face, the obligations employees hold and the broader legal framework in which investigations take place, allowing her to approach each file with both sensitivity to workplace dynamics and a clear focus on producing thorough, defensible results.
She began her career as a commercial litigator at a full-service firm, gaining significant experience representing clients before the courts, administrative boards and tribunals. This foundation allows her to bring strong advocacy skills and a practical understanding of risk to her investigative work.
Hayley also contributes to the profession through writing and speaking. She has co-authored articles and commentary for Canadian HR Reporter, HR News and other labour and employment publications, and has presented at firm seminars and industry conferences on employment law and workplace investigations.
She earned her law degree from Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2018. She also holds undergraduate degrees in History and Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Hayley is a member of the Ontario Bar Association.
Originally from Newfoundland, Hayley previously worked in the education sector before becoming a lawyer. Outside of practice, she enjoys exploring Toronto, travelling, movies, music, and Halloween.
