Carly Dunster

Partner

Carly Dunster practices in all areas of labour and employment law, with a focus on conducting workplace investigations.

As part of her investigation and post-investigation services practice, Carly works in a wide variety of sectors, tackling complex matters ranging from workplace harassment and human rights allegations, to fraud, misconduct, and breach of confidentiality allegations. She also conducts workplace audits and environmental assessments, where discord or conflict is present in the workplace but a specific complaint may not yet have been raised.

Carly further advises clients on how to build and maintain a healthy workplace following the completion of an investigation, and works to use the investigation, where appropriate, as a jumping off point for positive and preventative steps for the organization on a go forward basis. In this vein, her practice includes conducting mediations, facilitations, and group and one-on-one training sessions.

Prior to focusing her practice on workplace investigations and training, Carly worked on behalf of primarily employees in seeking out constructive and fair resolutions to workplace disputes, including wrongful dismissals, human rights actions, and conflicts that arise during the course of employment. She further advises organizations on policy development and implementation, and facilitates effective training programs for employers.

Carly is a member of the Association of Workplace Investigators (“AWI”) as well as an AWI Certificate Holder (AWI-CH).

Prior to joining the firm, Carly articled at a prominent labour and employment firm in downtown Toronto, and worked in management and director positions in the non-profit sector.

Outside of work, Carly is an avid cook, has dabbled in stand-up comedy, and does yoga on a semi-regular basis. She received her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 2006, and prior to that attended Queen’s University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in History.

  • “After being dismissed, I needed an expert to look at the initial settlement I was offered. I felt completely defeated before going into the offices at Turnpenney Milne. After meeting with Carly I felt supported, informed and equipped to navigate the negotiations with my former employer. The advice and guidance I received was exceptional. Carly helped to make a pretty distressing situation manageable – she’s professional and approachable. I’m not only thrilled with my experience with Carly but also the settlement I received!”

  • “When I required legal counsel Carly was highly recommended by acquaintances. Within minutes of our first meeting I understood why. Her professionalism and empathy were immediately apparent. Her effective advice, deep understanding of the nuances of law and strong negotiating skills delivered results even better than I had hoped for.”

  • “We were referred to TurnpenneyMilne to assist us with an internal complaint that was laced with sensitivities and had the potential to spiral into a messy situation. Carly Dunster was our investigator and her techniques, communication style and knowledge led us to a favourable conclusion within a very reasonable time frame. She demonstrated her finesse at separating truth from fiction, which given the parties to the complaint was no easy feat. Her communications throughout the entire process were excellent as well as her after care once the investigation was closed. “
