Tomorrow, November 30th 2021, Esi Codjoe is speaking at the CSME’s webinar “A Culturally Informed Approach to Practice and Legal Proceedings.”
In this webinar, Dr. Dere will have the audience engage with an approach to working with cultural factors in clinical practice that emphasizes the integration of evidence from both cultural and clinical psychology with a therapeutic stance of humility and curiosity. Empirical examples from the cultural psychology literature will be used to illustrate fundamental ways in which culture shapes human experience and behaviour, with direct implications for psychological distress and suffering.
Then, Lee Akazai and Esi Codjoe will discuss the implications of the content with respect to medico-legal practice and address the following:
What I said is not what you heard: how culturally biased recording of patient oral history can invalidate clinical findings and expose weakness during legal cross-examination
What’s so funny? how to demonstrate cultural awareness of perceived anomalies in presenting assessment findings
What can I say? Understanding and overcoming cultural biases in the legal system that lead to misunderstandings of patient behaviour
